ON THIS DAY: 18 JUNE

1948 | Britain, France, and the United States announced that from 21 June the Deutsche Mark would be introduced in West Germany and West Berlin. Over the next six days, the communists increasingly restricted access to Berlin.

1982 | A proclamation dissolving the 42-member Kagwane Legislative Assembly was published in the Government Gazette. KaNgwane was put under the direct management of the Department of Cooperation and Development and the Ingwavuma district.

1983 | STS-7 of the Space Shuttle program marked the entry of astronaut Sally Ride, the first American woman in space.

1994 | The Troubles: In Loughinisland, Northern Ireland, Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) members opened fire with assault rifles inside a packed pub. There were six Catholic civilian deaths and five injuries.

1998 | Propair Flight 420 crashed close to Montréal-Mirabel International Airport in Quebec, Canada, killing 11.
