On Monday, 13 March 2023, the Nelspruit based Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation, Crime Intelligence and Tactical Response Team conducted an intelligence driven tracing operation after Municipal Chief Traffic Officer Judas Chiloane, 60, was killed.

Two arrested after chief traffic officer is killed

The operation resulted in the arrest of two suspects, both aged 35, at Shabalala Trust Hazyview under Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga.

The team rigorously traced the suspects following the gruesome slaying of Chiloane on Saturday, 11 March 2023, between Hazyview and Graskop.

Armed intruders emerged from the bushes and fatally shot Chiloane while he was parked with his female friend.

The suspects took the victims’ firearm, and Chiloane’s friend called for help.

The police arrived at the scene, but Chiloane sustained multiple injuries and was declared dead on the scene.

Separate reports suggest that Chiloane parked his white Ford Ranger in the bushes for an ‘intimate moment’ with his girlfriend.

Pistol with an obliterated serial number seized

The police in Mpumalanga diligently pursued all information received from the public, resulting in the duo’s detention for questioning.

Further investigation led the team to conduct a search at one of the suspects’ houses, where they found and seized a pistol with an obliterated serial number for further investigation.

The suspect will be taken to court as soon as the preliminary investigation is completed.

The investigation is ongoing.

Provincial Head of the Hawks, Major General Gerber, is appealing to the community to join the dedicated members of the South African Police Service, who are tirelessly working to eradicate crime.
