Last week, a 23-year-old woman – who has been unconscious for seven months – delivered a healthy baby girl.

The woman faced a head injury after falling off a 2-wheeler

On 1 April, the woman was taken to the AIIMS trauma centre in New Delhi, India, with a severe head injury. The young woman was reportedly travelling with her husband on a 2-wheeler the night before.

The woman and her husband were not wearing helmets at the time of the accident, says Neurosurgeon Dr Deepak Gupta.

The woman fell off the 2-wheeler as she was sitting sideways and was without a helmet. Her husband did not sustain any head injury.

She was 40 days pregnant when the accident happened

Six weeks prior to the incident the woman and her husband got married. At the time of the accident, she was 40 days pregnant.

“She was unconscious on arrival and had evidence of severe brain injury with acute subdural hematoma inside her brain,” said Dr Gupta.

She was immediately put on ventilator support and taken to emergency surgery. IOL reports that the woman underwent five neurosurgical operations over the past seven months.

The baby was born on 22 October

After two ultrasound examinations, no congenital anomalies were found in the foetus. The medical team reportedly suggested the option of continuing the pregnancy with the woman’s family.

After a lot of discussions, they decided to continue the pregnancy.

While she is still unconscious, she is breathing on her own.

On 22 October, she gave birth to a healthy baby girl weighing 2.5kg. The delivery was conducted by a team from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and was done naturally (no caesarean).
