Prospectors and have-a-go gold miners might want to put their pick-axes away for the time being. Yes, Table Mountain will appear to give off a golden hue this week – and thankfully, this isn’t some sort of cataclysmic event to stick on 2020’s bill.

Gold lights in Cape Town

In fact, the cause will be a genuinely noble one: The City of Cape Town has confirmed that Table Mountain will briefly be lit up in gold this week, to raise awareness for childhood cancer. Various charities representing the young fighters, survivors, and victims of this disease have successfully managed to get their message projected onto the biggest stage of them all.

The Cape Town landmark is one of the most iconic sights on the continent, and this gesture from the city reminds us all that we’re living through a time, when togetherness is needed more than ever – even if that means keeping our distance.

In August, the geological marvel was illuminated in a shade of red, to highlight the plight of the service industry.

Why is Table Mountain gold?

Here’s what you need to know about Table Mountain turning gold:

  • The event will take place on Tuesday 6 October.
  • The light display will be in place for one hour, from 20:00 – 21:00.
  • The colour gold has been chosen because it is the same shade as the international awareness ribbon for childhood cancer.
  • The City of Cape Town has urged all citizens to upload their best pictures to social media, in support of the #GoingGold campaign.

“Table Mountain is going gold for the fighters and survivors of childhood cancer on Tuesday. We invite all local photographers – from iPhone wanderers to our top creatives – to take your best picture of that we can share with our superheroes to let them know we are supporting them all the way!”
