The phrase ‘White South Africans’ is trending on Twitter and it’s probably not what you’re thinking. The video that started the trend can be viewed below. The phrase already had 10 000 tweets at the time of publishing

The ‘White South Africans’ video – What we know

The origins of the video is a still a mystery at this point, however, it’s clear that the video was filmed by a white South African with an Afrikaans accent who is presumably working abroad.

The South African filming the video asks someone off-screen, Max, to call the police before asking a British citizen “to please move from the area”. The British citizen responds with a firm “[expletive] off”.

We’re not sure what happened before the camera started rolling, but we’re assuming the South African is a construction worker; we can hear him asking the man to leave the area because “it’s dangerous”.

‘Go back to South Africa’

The man – dressed in a red shirt, blue towel and booties – yells at the white South African, saying that he won’t leave and adds: “Why don’t you [expletive] off, it’s before 9 o’clock in the morning”.

He turns towards the camera again and says that the South African is “the who’s one not supposed to be here”, before calling him a “provocateur”. The enraged citizen then adds:

“You are provoking everybody, standing here with your [expletive] white skin, [expletive] being a white [expletive] South African, with your [expletive] East-European [expletive] cronies. Where’s the [expletive] jobs for the English [expletive] boys”.

He goes on to call the South African a “[expletive] racist, coming here undercutting all our [expletive] work for us” before yelling at the construction worker to “[expletive] off back to South Africa, you [expletive] cheapskate”.

The video was shared by multiple netizens on 4 September and began trending early on Saturday. Opinion from South African citizens seem to be divided, and of course, the meme game is on point!

“When he said ‘back to South Africa’ I died. So they always threaten to leave knowing very well that nobody likes them anywhere. They’re only tolerated by us here in Mzansi”.

Some shared a “How To Get The Look” tweet, consisting of a red t-shirt, a blue towel, ankle-high boots and a bright pink phone case. Others pointed out the irony that a white South African was being accused of stealing work.

Several Twitter users also remarked how “white South Africans are not liked by other white people in other countries”; one netizen shared a personal experience to back it up:

“My sister and I were at a wine fest in Stellenbosch. A Canadian couple came to sit with us because they said White South Africans are racist.”

Other netizens pointed out the irony of a British citizen accusing a South African of stealing jobs “when Britain stole the entire Earth”. A user known only as ‘RealityIsBroken’ said that “the man in the video is being xenophobic”.

“It is classic anti-foreigner [expletive]. Is the white South African racist? We don’t know. Foreigners of every color face this ignorant bullshit everywhere.”

The phrase was also used by people who spoke out against Clicks’ racist ad campaign which labelled Black people’s hair as frizzy, dull, dry and damaged, while white people’s hair was labelled as “normal, fine and flat.”.
