Orania latest: Town leader laughs at Panyaza Lesufi’s ‘unsuccessful record’

Panyaza Lesufi said this week that ‘Orania will go’ in the near future, calling time on the whites-only town. But the outcry has been fierce.

We tell you what, Orania vs Panyaza Lesufi is a battle well worth following. The Gauteng Education MEC ruffled feathers this weekend, when he stated on his Twitter account that the whites-only town ‘will soon go’.

Orania CEO tackles Panyaza Lesufi – and leaves a mark

Lesufi, who has passionately argued for Orania to cease its existence before, has told residents and supporters of the enclave that they can ‘scream and shout as they wish’ – however, one town official has used his voice in a calmer manner, and it’s a pretty damning critique of the provincial politician…

Joost Strydom is the CEO of the Orania Movement. He became the first official representative of the settlement to bite back against Mr. Lesufi, and brought up his achievements in office. Strydom, however, was scathing – and said that the MEC could not govern Gauteng’s schools as well as Orania locals can govern theirs…

“Orania’s response to empty criticism has always been to grow even faster, provide better services and look after our community more efficiently. However, we do not see that Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi is successful in addressing any of the educational challenges in his province.”

“If we had the R300 million wasted on so-called disinfection of schools in Gauteng, we could take the incredible development of our schools and tertiary education, which are already successes, to the next level.”

Panyaza’s ‘self-determination’ problem…

Orania, now 27 years old, does face an uncertain future. Northern Cape Premier Zamani Saul has also expressed his doubts about the morality of having a whites-only town in the Rainbow Nation of Mzansi. Lesufi, meanwhile, is expected to double down on his comments about the Afrikaaner stronghold…
