Watch: “Jirre, Dimitri!” – speedster flips car over as joyride cut short

The commentary on this is iconic: A Western Cape joyrider and his mates filmed themselves driving, smashed their car up, and gave us all “Jirre, Dimitri!”

If you’re going to film yourself speeding around a residential area in a souped-up, high-performance car, then the very least you could do is keep your eyes on the road. A group of “easy riders” in the Western Cape may soon shoot to viral fame, after footage of their disastrous joyride was uploaded online.

Weaving round the back streets of the Cape Town suburbs, the sound of the turbo-powered engine roars through the peaceful night. There’s revving, accelerating and even a bit of speeding thrown into the mix, as the vehicle powers down an empty street. That’s what makes the next bit so funny.

Watch: High-performance car rolls over in the Western Cape

Out of nowhere, the car seems to encounter difficulties. In a split second, they’ve gone from tearing up the tarmac to rolling on it. Their vehicle has, somewhat inexplicably, flipped over and landed on its side. The confusion within the motor is apparent for us all to see – and in this situation, it takes a great Western Cape wordsmith to calm everyone down.

“Jirre Dimitri!” could become an iconic line

Unfortunately, these boys didn’t have one. They just had their cameraman scalding the driver instead. Once the dust settles and the lads get their bearings, an exclamation if “Jirre, Dimitri!” is heard repeatedly. It’s safe to say the friends aren’t best pleased with their driver’s skills behind the wheel, who apparently blamed “brake failure” for this spectacular binning.

The gang eventually get out of the car, and the video ends abruptly. But those “rolling r’s” really add something to this tragically-comedic tale. The video was uploaded by 1SecondLater – a group who are busy campaigning for increased driving safety practices in the Western Cape. We imagine that the roads of Cape Town are, at least, a little safer now Dimitri is off the road…
