Watch: Escaped horses run wild on the N2 near Durban

How much horse-power has your engine got? It probably won’t measure up to the collective of colts that were seen on the N2 in Durban earlier today.

Now, we aren’t usually ones to stirrup trouble, but when a bunch of horses end up running in the fast lane of the N2 high-neigh, it’s not a hurdle we can just jump over. On Wednesday, the galloping geldings were seen occupying the major commuter route near Durban, after inexplicably finding their way into the middle of the road.

Horses off-course: Bizarre traffic incident on N2 Southbound

Astonishing footage from the scene shows several vehicles having to negotiate the equestrian pedestrians, after they caused something of a traffic ‘mare earlier this morning. Ignoring the music blaring out of the stereo system, these horses observed the speed limit impeccably – but their lane discipline was all over the place.

The stallions and fillies didn’t pay much attention to the merging signs, and most were grouped together in one large cluster. A solitary straggler at the back alerts road users to more trouble up ahead, as vehicles were left with little room for maneuver. The video of the incident has since been shared hundreds of times on social media…

We will publish more details we get on this incident as they comes in, but so far, we’ve only been able to establish the basics. According to local community groups and multiple eye-witnesses at the scene…

  • – About 12 to 24 horses were seen running on the N2 to the north of Durban, at the Umhlali off-ramp
  • – The incident took place on Wednesday morning, on the southbound carriageway.
  • – There is a farm near where the incident took place, but investigators are investigating all other possibilities.
  • – One theory is that the horses may have broken free from a transportation trailer.
  • – We are awaiting confirmation on whether all of the animals have since been recaptured.
