Well, that was a blow-out wasn’t it? At 00:00 tonight, 2020 will hand the torch over to 2021 – and we genuinely have no idea what happens now. This year also harbours a deadly hangover, meaning that the next few months will also be tough. But, having said all that, we still found time for a laugh in the last 12 months. No more moping, let’s get to it…

The funniest political gaffes of 2020

Cyril’s mask madness

If we could choose one moment to summarise 2020, it would be this. We’ve all been left confused. We have all struggled. Indeed, most of this pandemic has felt like the blind have been leading the blind. Ramaphosa’s struggles here are the perfect visual metaphor for the year from hell. Mind you, it’s still bloody hilarious to watch back…

Tito Mboweni’s kitchen nightmares

The less said about Chef Mboweni, the better. The Finance Minister really should stick to the day job, after his multiple attempts at cooking were hammered on Twitter. Still, at least Tito likes his own garlic-soaked chicken…

When People Zol

Iconic. When Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma announced the ban on cigarettes, she went the full distance and implicitly stated that people were also prohibited from the ‘zol’. Her colloquialism became the meme of the year, before our minister got the full remix treatment from DJ Max Hurrell.

Lockdown chaos dominates 2020

The cooked chicken fiasco

This is more like one of those situations where, if we don’t laugh, we could easily cry. At the height of coronavirus’ first wave, the government seemed to collectively lose its mind for a moment when it banned the sales of cooked foods. People were left perplexed by the directive, that was eventually rescinded during the winter.

The DA MP ‘spotted in a liquor store’

“I’ve never heard of Hunters” will always be an elite – but ultimately, unconvincing – excuse. In the first of several Zoom mishaps to make headlines this year, the DA’s Tsepo Mhlongo landed himself in hot water when he appeared to be walking round a liquor store during a Parliamentary meeting. The MP denied the claims, but the fallout from the incident was epic.

Eastern Cape scooter debacle

How not to manage a pandemic 101. The Eastern Cape royally fudged parts of their response to COVID-19, and when they spunked R10 million on a fleet of ‘medical scooters’, jaws were dropped across the country. The knock-off rickshaws were meant to transport ill patients to hospital – but they were eventually scrapped, for obvious reasons.

Hospitals need ‘vibrators’ – Mthembu

Absolute belly-laughs when this one came out. An over-enthusiastic Jackson Mthembu endured a real cock-up back in April, when he suggested that hospitals were in need of more ‘vibrators’ to help treat patients. We think he meant ‘ventilators’. We hope to GOD he meant ventilators

Cyril giggling at Malema

In March, the nation stood on the brink of disaster – so a little comic relief was certainly welcome. Cyril Ramaphosa, of all people, became the first person to break the tension when he had a fit of giggles during Julius Malema’s lockdown speech. Juju got onto the controversial topic of nationalising hospitals – and Cyril couldn’t hold it in any longer.

Ndabeni-Abrahams’ Geneva gaffe

If Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams ever becomes our DIRCO Minister, we’ll be in trouble. The politician has had a controversial year, and even broke lockdown protocols at the beginning of the pandemic. However, before coronavirus hit, Ndabeni-Abrahams publicly argued that Geneva was ‘in France’, instead of Switzerland. Geography isn’t her strong suit…

The best of 2020: Too good to ignore

2FAST4U… but mainly yourself

This Constantia car crash made national headlines, when a woman revved her car and took off at an alarming pace, smashing into pot plants that narrowly protected the stunned guests on back in August.

Gladly no one was injured, so we can take the liberty of pointing out some of the hilarious factors at play here: Look no further than the fact that the woman’s Jaguar boasted the ironic number plate “2Fast4U”.

Katie Hopkins tricked by ‘C*** Award’

Ha! We doubt anyone has ever been so deserving of any other accolade in their life. Bankrupt rent-a-gob Katie Hopkins was stitched-up royally by a South African YouTuber, who brazenly convinced the hate preacher to accept an award at a fake ceremony in Prague. However, the ceremony was a sham – and it made for compelling viewing.

Cop choreography

In January, social media was left in stitches by footage of four police guards who don’t know their left from their right. They were attending the funeral and memorial service held for a man who revolutionised Soweto. Richard Maponya, aged 99, passed away peacefully on 6 January, but he didn’t exactly get a smooth send-off from these cops.
