A family in Verulam, Durban are at their wit’s end this week, after a THIRD black mamba slithered its way into the occupants’ home. The incidents, which have all taken place throughout April, have left the residents feeling ‘uneasy’ – and somewhat baffled by the snakes’ preferred crawlspace.

Thank heavens, then, that Jason Arnold lives nearby. The local snake expert is something of a social media star for his exploits with the slippery serpents, and he was once again summoned to a property in Mountainview. This time, he brought a camera crew along with him – to document how he safely and humanely captures these rogue black mambas.

The highly venomous creatures need handling with care – yet it took Arnold just 15 minutes to find the snake, lure him out of the bushes, and bag him up for a safe return into the wild. You can watch the whole incredible process right here.

What brings a black mamba into this Durban suburb?

As Arnold tells his film crew – and the gathering of fascinated locals during his latest snake rescue – the black mamba they came across on Wednesday was 2.2 metres long, and weighed three kilograms. You wouldn’t fancy your chances facing these things down once – let alone having to do it three times in almost as many weeks.

So, what exactly is the science behind the snakes’ preference for this house? Well, it’s merely coincidental that they picked the same property each time – but there’s nothing random about the suburb and its location. Arnold believes there is a female black mamba living nearby, and all the boys are now fighting to track her down for mating season.

“I can only assume there to be a female black mamba in the neighbourhood, and her scent is being picked up by all the nearby males in the area and they are all trying to track her down because mating season is coming up.”
