Sometimes, you can watch a video and seriously question what you’re eyes are telling you. This clip firmly belongs in that category: Rescue efforts took place on Thursday to reclaim a bakkie from the sea, after the vehicle ended up submerged under the waves in Cape Town. The circumstances are mysterious, to say the least…

Bakkie in the sea

The incident, reported to have happened near Baden Powell Drive, is shrouded in confusion. No statements have been made as to how the bakkie ended up there, and in these early stages, context has proved difficult to come by. Heavy machinery from the nearest town had to be called in to help pull the motor out of the ocean.

Trucks, diggers, and other mechanical behemoths descended upon the beach to help get the bakkie to safety. In the clip posted on social media, one of the recovery vehicles also seems to get its wheels stuck in the sand. This comedy of errors could have led to something a little more tragic, had reinforcements not arrived just in time.

We’ve heard of an Ocean Drive, but this is simply ridiculous. Bystanders were also able to get a good look at the chaos unfolding in this part of Cape Town, as waves continued to crash into the bakkie and its attempted rescuers.

Of course, Level 1 lifts a lot of restrictions once it comes into play. But the last time we checked, it doesn’t mean we can start driving on water. Foul play is not suspected in this case, so Police Minister Bakkie Sea-le won’t be getting involved…
