At the front of the car’s tyres are black refuse bags which were strategically placed below the two front wheels. The gender reveal doesn’t make much sense at this point.

Then suddenly the white Volkswagen (VW) Polo reverses to get momentum before driving quickly over the refuse bags placed on the road. Blue powder comes out of the bags and stains the road.

The couple’s family and friends could be heard shouting in excitement in the background before the camera turns to them. The couple is seen celebrating the news that they’re going to have a baby boy.

Couple’s reveal goes viral on social media

At the time of publication, 19 hours later, the clip had received more than 18k views on Facebook. More than 300 people had also reacted to the post.

The popularity of gender reveal parties has grown over the years. However, the Durban couple’s method wasn’t the one most people went for.

Most parents-to-be generally opt for bursting balloons, a pinata, or throwing smoke bombs. Gender reveals have become a fun way for parents to share the sex of their soon-to-be-born babies with their loved ones.

American student says she had reveal 10 years ago

Jenna Karvunidis, a law student and blogger from Chicago, United States, wrote about her experience planning such a party online. She pulled of a gender reveal more than 10 years ago!

However, she’s since come to see gender reveals in a different light. She took to her Facebook page called ‘High Gloss and Sauce’ to share how she’d made a 360-turn on the ever-growing trend.

Karvunidis doesn’t care about gender reveals anymore

In the post, she credited herself for starting the trend. But she also admitted that she now finds them quite ridiculous.

Karvunidis explained how she now feels about gender reveals writing:

“Who cares what gender the baby is? I did at the time because we didn’t live in 2019 and didn’t know what we know now – that assigning focus on gender at birth leaves out so much of their potential and talents that have nothing to do with what’s between their legs.”

Despite her personal change of heart, people are loving the trend.
