History of cheddar day

Kings, queens, and settlers alike have savored cheese for centuries.

The legend of cheese dates back to the twelfth century in Somerset, England.

Here a young woman allegedly left a pail of milk in a cave, only to return and find it had transformed into this now-beloved cheese.

The popularity of cheddar quickly spread throughout England and Europe and eventually made its way to the New World with settlers.

By 1790, colonists were making their own cheese and exporting it back to England.

The world’s first cheese factory, which focused primarily on production, opened in upstate New York in 1851.

Today, the US leads as the largest cheddar producer in the world, with Wisconsin being the top producer in the country.

In 2020, cheese makers in the US produced over 3.8 billion pounds of cheese.

Cheddar remains the most commonly used cheese for cheeseburgers, making this day a fitting celebration of this delightful cheese.
