The driver of a high-performance sports car is being sought by traffic officials, after the cocky motorist topped the 300km/h mark last week while filming themselves breaking the law in Midrand.

The clip shows a person speeding to the extreme late last Tuesday evening. A quick shot of the dashboard tells us the incident occured at 22:33 on 14 January. The speedster has one hand on the steering wheel, and another on the cellphone while continuing to drive in a life-threatening fashion.

We see the vehicle weave across lanes and pass other road users sporadically. The driver has made the most of the open the roads, but their warp-speed joyride has now put them on Gauteng’s wanted list.

Police in Gauteng search for N1 speedster

The Gauteng Traffic Police have confirmed they are investigating the Midrand incident, but lamented the limitations in this probe. They claim that they need credible witnesses to help secure a conviction – something that is tough to come by – and lodged their complaints about a “lack of resources”.

“These criminals arrogantly show off because very few – if anyone at all – will expose their identity and then go on to provide evidence or witness testimony that will result in conviction. Nobody has come forward with verifiable identification in the Midrand case, and we couldn’t detect a legible license plate.”

“The fact is, if we want to catch such potential killers behind the wheel, it requires 24/7 adequate resources almost everywhere. It’s the same as other criminals who know they have opportunities are galore, only with reliable community assisted credible intel is it possible to get criminals behind bars.”

Gauteng Traffic Police

Based on this statement, the speedster might just be able to get away with this one. Investigations are ongoing, but catching this criminal will not be as simple as many first thought. Such reckless behaviour has no place on South Africa’s roads and the sooner it is stamped out, the better.
