By focusing on the future, many people often forget to appreciate the present moment, the only moment that is truly guaranteed; Carpe Diem or Seize the Day is a phrase that reminds us to cherish the present moment.

History of Carpe Diem Day

In the 19th century, the phrase “Carpe Diem” began to appear in English language writings.

However, it gained even more popularity in the first half of the 20th century.

This when Robert Frost published his poem of the same name in 1938.

In his poem, Frost expressed his desire for children to “seize the day of pleasure” and be happy.

Friends and family of Yvette Francino established National Carpe Diem Day after she supported her friend Craig Dunham through his diagnosis of ALS and eventual passing.

Yvette’s determination to live each day to the fullest, even in the face of challenges, inspired others to do the same.

In 2014, Yvette raised over $12,000 for ALS research through twelve different ice bucket challenges.

Her passion for promoting joyful experiences and meaningful connections in life led to the creation of National Carpe Diem Day.

To celebrate turning 60 years old, Yvette spent 60 weeks taking on various challenges to seize the day.

As a tribute to Craig Dunham, who inspired her to live life to the fullest, Yvette uses the letters “CD” to represent Carpe Diem and Craig’s initials.

This day is now celebrated in honor of Craig’s inspiration and Yvette’s commitment to living life to the fullest.
