That’s a marked improvement: Artist “Rasta” became a figure of derision for his Ramaphosa portrait in January. His take on Malema has gone down much better.

If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again: That’s what has happened with one of South Africa’s latest viral stars, even if his fame was achieved in reluctant fashion. “Rasta” is a portrait artist by trade, and made headlines back in January when his drawing of President Cyril Ramaphosa was widely panned.

Who is Rasta?

Attending the ANC’s 107th birthday celebrations at the start of the year, Rasta attempted to sketch the president in front of a black, green and gold backdrop symbolising the ANC. However, he got the facial features, eyes and well, just about everything wrong…

Shem! The incident caused a wave of chortles across social media, with Rasta – real name Lebani Sirenje – becoming a figure of derision. But, in true South African style, the man behind the canvas has found a way to rise above the ridicule. And all he had to do was attend a different party’s rally.

Malema portrait impresses the masses

The EFF’S Tshela Thupa rally at Orlando Stadium in Soweto is playing host to the final campaign event for the red berets. Rasta has been invited along as one of the guests, to capture the essence of Julius Malema. For those who were expecting an own goal, you’ll have to eat some humble pie for Sunday lunch…

The incredible turnaround has now been lauded by the same crowds who were berating him back in January. Some suggested that Rasta simply had “more respect” for Malema, whereas others hailed the improvement:

Water under the bridge for Malema and Rasta

In fact, it marks a complete 180-degree turn for Julius Malema’s own opinion on Rasta, too. Back in April 2018, Juju slated his portrait of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela shortly after her death. After today, we’re sure that the CIC and his friend with the paintbrush can put this whole thing behind them:
