Nearly one hundred senior citizens participated in the annual Golden Games in Cape Town on Wednesday, 2 November. The event was held at the Green Point Track.

FUN DAY OUT FOR SENIOR CITIZENS

The City said the Golden Games is meant to empower the elderly and encourage them to stay physically active and healthy.

The senior citizens from Hangberg, Imizamo Yethu, Woodstock and Bo-Kaap played a variety of games including egg and spoon races, bowling, netball, relays and more.

However, the highlight of the day was a freestyle dance competition, which had the participants doubled over in laughter.

The oldest participant was Juliana Opperman, 82, from Hangberg.

“Our older residents play an important role in our communities as they bring wisdom, experience and calm. They are also one of the vulnerable groups and are often neglected or forgotten. Our senior clubs give them the opportunity to interact socially with their peers and enjoy recreational activities to keep them healthy and alert,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.

Senior citizens can join a senior club by paying a visit to their nearest City community centre, which is listed on www.capetown.gov.za, or by emailing RP.enquiries@capetown.gov.za  for more information.
