Shots fired: Patricia de Lille sings “goodbye” to Mmusi Maimane [video]

This could reignite one of the most bitter feuds in South African politics. Patricia de Lille has trolled Mmusi Maimane with her “goodbye” message.

A flood of political reaction greeted Mmusi Maimane’s resignation on Wednesday evening, but in a deliciously-ironic turn, it would be Patricia de Lille who spoke loudest on the matter. The Good Party leader posted a very smug assessment of the situation on her Facebook page.

Patricia de Lille has her say on “unprincipled” DA politicians

She revelled in the misfortune the DA were experiencing this week, claiming that she new Maimane would face a fate like the one that has befallen him. De Lille slammed him for being an unprincipled leader, too:

“I hate to say I told you so but I am going to say it anyway. I am not claiming to be a sangoma but I warned Mmusi Maimane that if he didn’t stand on principle his party’s laptop boys would swallow him up and spit him out. The DA is well on its way on the path of destruction, and it’s best we don’t disturb them.”

“He saw the blue train coming but didn’t know how to get out of the way. The problem for Mmusi and his handlers in the DA is that none of them have a clue about principled leadership.”

But that was the most cordial thing Patricia de Lille was willing to offer her former colleague. A video has emerged online of the cabinet minister singing a “goodbye” song for Mmusi Maimane. Stood next to the South African flag and giggling throughout, Aunty Pat really did go the extra mile here:

Fighting with the DA

Patricia de Lille has her reasons for enjoying such schadenfreude. She officially left the DA last year, after fighting for her position as Cape Town’s Mayor for the previous 12 months. The veteran politician was embroiled in a bitter feud with the party, who accused her of nepotism and bullying.

De Lille denies these claims outright, as the party fought tooth and nail to eject her from office. In the end, they parted ways following the most bitter of all divorces. The minister may get some stick for showing some “unsportsmanlike” behaviour, but one could argue that all is fair in love and politics – and that this is just some light-hearted shithousery.
