Okay, we know right? It is like there is a day celebrated for everything in existence, but you need to admit that this appliance deserves its day. 6 December is microwave oven day!

The history of microwave ovens

Percy Spencer, a self-taught American engineer, discovered a way to safely heat food with microwaves by accident.

In 1945, he noticed a melting chocolate bar in his pocket while working with an active radar.

The beams produced a heating effect that was ideal for cooking.

Spencer purposefully tried to cook popcorn in the microwave.

He then attempted to cook an egg. Both the popcorn and the egg produced spectacular results.

Unlike the egg, however, the popcorn was a success. The egg exploded in his coworker’s face!

Spencer, who worked for Raytheon, continued to experiment with different heating methods.

On October 8, 1945, Raytheon filed a US patent application for Spencer’s microwave cooking process.

Raytheon created the first commercially available oven in 1947. It was known as the “Radarange.”

A microwave is installed in approximately 90% of homes in the United States.
