Staying at a quarantine hotel at your own cost already sucks, but paying nearly R5 000 a day for meals? That’s just insane

Eswatini-born English actor Richard E Grant is not happy at all with the United Kingdom (UK) government and he wants you to know! The star had to fork out £228 – that’s over a whopping R4 800 for three meals at a quarantine hotel at Gatwick in the UK on Saturday.

Well, what does close to R5 000 get you at this hotel? A tuna and cucumber sandwich, two sausages and a tomato-onion mix sauce, a samosa, chips and couscous. Doesn’t exactly sound like something prepared by a Michelin-star chef, does it?

Like thousands of other travellers, the 64-year-old was impacted by the UK’s decision to impose travel restrictions on those coming from Southern Africa. Grant had been visiting his elderly mother when the Omicron variant was detected. He had no other choice but to spend 10 days at the four-star Holiday Inn, upon his return.

“In quarantine at 4*Holiday Inn at airport (under reconstruction) at daily cost of £228. These 3 meals amount to £20 if that. Non quarantine Holiday Inn charges £89 incl breakfast. How can Gov justify this cost for ‘hospitality’ for a traveller? You do the maths, as confounds me!,” Grant wrote on Instagram.

Grant has featured in prominent TV and film productions including Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Loki, Downton Abbey, Doctor Who and Game of Thrones.

Well, there was a flood of reaction to Grant’s post, many of whom seemed to agree with his sentiments.

“This is the unfortunate thing. They don’t care about the working class. They never have and never will. Take advantage of the working class while living in fine houses,” said on Instagram user.

“Welcome to the poor person’s world….you are lucky enough to be able to afford it…..but it still isn’t fair you are right,” said another.
