With much of our private lives and personal details transferred to the internet today, safer internet day reminds us to take care of our online safety.

History of safer internet day

The US Department of Homeland Security and the European Commission officially established Safer Internet Day in 2012.

This was established to make the internet a safer place for young people.

In 2013, ConnectSafely.org took the lead in coordinating efforts in America and has been working to improve it every year.

Each year, they choose a theme and set a goal to achieve.

In 2015, they promoted the theme “Actions & Activism Toward a Better Net & World” and focused on issues such as bullying and collaborating with the National Parent Teacher Association.

They aimed to use technology for social change, leveraging the internet’s ability to connect and communicate with people from diverse backgrounds worldwide.

The internet brings the world closer together, and that is its purpose.

How to protect yourself online

UCDavis Health provides the following tips to ensure your safety while online:

  • Take caution when clicking links/attachments
  • Vverify requests for private information
  • Secure passwords
  • Regularly update devices/browsers/apps
  • Regularly back up important files
  • Dispose of sensitive information when no longer required.
