Do we have some oracles in our midst? On Tuesday evening, keen Powerball players were left astonished by a winning combination they’d never seen before. The draw numbers for 1 December – 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9, dropped jaws… and when the Powerball itself was drawn as 10, mandibles reached the floor.
But what compounded the surprise for millions of South Africans was the fact that so many winners had managed to strike it lucky. A total of 20 people – who toe that fine line between anarchy and genius – were victorious. They all earned themselves a R5.68 million fortune, from a R114 million jackpot. But how did they do it?
Winners have been speaking out over the past few days – about their ambitions for their new-found wealth, mainly – but a few of the lucky so-and-sos have revealed the method behind their apparent madness. So is it some sort of intricate maths formula that guarantees success, or perhaps a self-taught Jedi mind-trick?
No. In fact, it would seem that picking these numbers is far from a calculated choice for many. The collective responses to Ithuba’s questions so far have been incredibly nonchalant:
Unfortunately, there’s no specific tactic or strategy you can employ to pre-empt another result like this. We can only imagine there will be riots if 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 come out of the hat during Friday’s Powerball draw – which is the first time the competition will play-out since Tuesday’s freak occurrence.
Earlier in the week, we learned that a random number generator is used to pick the numbers, then they are placed on the screen in numerical order. Eight was *technically* the first ball to be drawn on Tuesday, with six being the last.
