While random acts of stupidity ought to be ignored and not given the attention they so crave, the bizarre behaviour exhibited by a holidaymaker from Free State left beachgoers on Shelley Beach, in Kwa-Zulu Natal absolutely speechless.

What happened at Shelley Beach?

A normal day at the beach was interrupted by the bizarre sighting of a green Golf speeding towards the sea. The footage was captured by the CCTV cameras of the Shelley Beach ski-boat club.

Soon after the car smashed into the ferocious waves, the driver quickly got out of the car and disappeared out of frame. He would not be heard of again.

Observers of this strange occurrence were left scratching their heads. What in the world could have driven this man to randomly drive his car into the sea and casually walk away?

Why did Free State man drive his car into the sea?

As it turns out, this was all part of a silly dare. Brenda Johnson, a secretary at the Shelley Beach ski-boat club was quoted in a Times Live article explaining that the man had attracted a large crowd at around 13:00 on Monday afternoon.

“Initially I heard it was a suicide attempt, later it was established that the man was dared by a friend to drive his car into the sea. He just drove straight into the ocean.

“He walked out unhurt. It wasn’t very deep but the waves were much more powerful than his Golf,” she explained.

Those who were not clued up on what was happening alerted the police as well as emergency services. However, when they arrived at the scene, the man was nowhere to be found.

The car was later hauled out of the water by a tow truck and it has since been kept at an impound lot due to the fact that there was no licence disc on it.

Those who were around when the dare was made revealed that the Free State man agreed to drive his car into the sea if his friend would purchase it for R5 000.
