A phobia is an anxiety disorder involving excessive and persistent fear of a situation or object. Exposure to the source of the fear triggers an immediate anxiety response.

Most specific phobias fall into one of four major categories:

  • Fears of the natural environment
  • Fears related to animals
  • Fear related to medical treatments or issues
  • Fears related to specific situations

Phobia of the Day: Acrophobia refers to the fear of heights.

The main symptom of acrophobia is feeling intense anxiety and fear of heights. Some people with acrophobia fear significant heights such as a tall bridge while others also fear shorter heights such as being on a ladder. Psychological symptoms

  • Feeling intense fear and anxiety when thinking about, looking at,, or being in high places.
  • Fearing that something negative will happen in a high place such as falling or being trapped in a high place.
  • Feeling a strong desire to escape if you’re in a high place.

  • Learn to manage panic and anxiety. 
  • Look into joining a support group. 
  • Use self-help resources. 
  • Take a course for your specific phobia.
