Go on, Ed Sheeran! One of the world’s biggest music acts is now fully backing our boys on both the rugby and the cricket pitch. You can stay, mate.

That’s the stuff! Ed Sheeran performed for the first time during the South African leg of his Divide tour on Saturday night and brought the house down with a barnstorming performance. He didn’t really need to do much more to enthral the audience, but of course, he pulled out the Springboks jersey…

Ed Sheeran loves South Africa – it’s official!

The Ipswich-born guitarist and singer put the rugby top on halfway through his set at the FNB Stadium, much to the delight of all South Africans in attendance. We’ve got to admit, it bloody well suits him:

The Divide Tour – latest news:

Ed returns to the same arena on Sunday night, to deliver his third and final performance in Johannesburg in the past three months. The Brit rocker also put in a powerhouse performance during the Global Citizen Festival last December, culminating in a duet with The Carters.

That event was marred by security issues afterwards, with scores of concert-goers getting mugged on their way out of the venue. Blame was placed with the police and local transport companies, who were both unable to manage the flow of attendees leaving the arena.

However, safety measures have been bumped up spectacularly since that fateful evening: The Johannesburg Metro Police aren’t playing games here and revealed the extent of their operation at Soccer City.

A member of the Proteas’ A-Team?

So, what’s Ed been up to after Saturday’s gig? Well, he bolted down to The Wanderers of course, to watch the final T20 between South Africa and Sri Lanka.

He decided to rock up in a Proteas jersey instead of his Springboks shirt this time, and he must be amassing quite the collection by now. Perhaps he’s saving his Bafana Bafana kit for this evening?

Looks like Ed is “in love with the team of brus” (sorry, couldn’t help it). Although, he’s always had a bit of a soft-spot for Mzansi. Just before his career properly took off, he Tweeted this gem about the time he gatecrashed a house party full of South Africans. May we ask, who exactly is his Afrikaans teacher?
