Google South Africa revealed the search terms that piqued South Africans’ interest the most in 2022. Perhaps it comes as no surprise that a familiar favourite finished top of the pile for the second year in a row.
GOOGLE REVEALS SOUTH AFRICA’S MOST SEARCHED TERMS
Google’s Year in Search lists are populated by search terms that had the highest spike this year compared to the previous year, explained the search engine.
The top trending search for 2022 was “SRD Status Check.” Evidently, millions of South Africans were concerned about whether their applications for the vital social assistance were approved or not. It is the second year in a row that the R350 grant was the most popular search term.

The second most popular trending search term was “Wordle” – the smash-hit word-based game that took the world by storm before being acquired by the New York Times for more than $1 million.
“The annual Year in Search results are a good example of Google’s commitment to organising the world’s information and making it universally accessible and useful, in action. This year’s results show that Google is a trusted source of information when South Africans are uncertain, sad, or looking for ways to learn more or entertain themselves,” said Google South Africa Director, Alistair Mokoena.
