A mom from the US state of Washington has gone viral after running to grab her toddler as she went to try and hug an actual bear in their backyard.

The incident was captured on the woman’s own CCTV camera and was uploaded on the video-sharing social media platform TikTok. The video shows Samantha Martin calling for little Juniper to come back inside before turning a corner and seeing her daughter curiously running toward the animal.

The hero mom spoke to FOX 13 about the incident and the emotions which followed after realising her toddler could possibly be mauled to death by a bear, right before her own eyes.

“She pointed out this bear and screamed at it, and then started running toward it. It started running across the fence and she chased it, so I just panicked. I didn’t really have a lot of thoughts at the moment,” said Martin.

Martin reckons Juniper wanted to see the animal after learning from an animal identification book and bears becoming her favorite. She says the baby bear ended up running away and had been eating bird seeds from her now-destroyed bird feeder that she doesn’t plan to fix.

“I love birds, but I also don’t want bears to continuously come into the yard, so I’m not putting the bird seed back up,” Martin said to the broadcaster.

She added that her concern was not with the baby per se, but rather with the cub’s parents, who are bigger and could have been just about anywhere.

“It was just a little baby bear, but my biggest concern wasn’t necessarily the baby bear so much as I didn’t know where the mom was and didn’t know how she’d feel about two humans running towards her baby,” she said.

Martin says she has schooled her daughter, telling her that bears are dangerous. She now plans to child-proof the patio door as a precaution.
