‘Not again!’ – eTV’s Saturday Night Movie choice sparks huge backlash

We’ve seen this one before. Many, many times – and even political heavyweights are dismayed by eTV’s pick for the Saturday Night Movie.

That’s it. This really is the straw that breaks the Anaconda‘s back. Quite rightly, eTV have been slammed by the South African public on Thursday, after they confirmed an absolute dud for this week’s Saturday Night Movie.

Anaconda announcement sparks public fury

Anaconda has a 4.8 / 10 rating on IMDB. It’s 37% rating on Rotten Tomatoes is even more damning. A strong cast – including Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson, and Jon Voight – can’t save the film from its own outright ridiculousness. But, rather inexplicably, it has become one of the most played movies on SA television.

None of us really know why, either. The 1997 blockbuster isn’t exactly a cinema classic, and in other countries, the same fascination with this tale about a massive killer snake doesn’t command the same prestige.

eTV slammed for Saturday Night Movie selection

Anaconda has become an easy punchline, for both its poor quality and bizarre frequency on our airwaves. So when eTV confirmed it would be the Saturday Night Movie for 15 January, all hell broke loose online…

Mmusi Maimane steps in to Anaconda fiasco

The Tweet put out by eTV has been firmly ‘ratioed’, meaning is has drawn many more negative responses than positive ones. However, it seems the resistance now has some political backing.

Mmusi Maimane, the former DA leader and current OneSAMovement chief, expressed his fury at the uninspired choice. He compared eTV’s behaviour to that of the ANC, and implored them to drop the flick from their roster.

“You are behaving like the ANC now. You can’t still be showing Anaconda in 2022.”
