Green Mamba Slithers into Kitchen

Crocworld Conservation Centre said the Green Mamba was startled by the human and sought refuge under a pink plastic bucket in the kitchen sink.

The snake remained sheltered in the shadow of the bucket until the conservation centre’s reptile team arrived and removed it. The Green Mamba was released into a suitable habitat away from people.

“Green Mambas are shy in nature, rarely seen emerging from the dense vegetation in which they live, unless in search of food, water or for reproductive purposes.

“Their primarily neurotoxic venom attacks the central nervous system and lungs, thus impairing the victim’s ability to walk, talk and breathe,” said Crocworld Conservation Centre.

‘Highly venomous’

SAVP polyvalent antivenom, which is in short supply in South Africa, is effective at treating bites from this species of snake.

The conservation centre said bites from the highly venomous Green Mamba are relatively rare. If the species is left alone and given the opportunity to escape, it will take it.

Members of the public are encouraged to contact the conservation for snake removals in Scottsburgh and surrounding areas at 039-976-1103.
