The allegations of censorship at eNCA, levelled by former journalist at the television news broadcaster Samkele Maseko, have left a sour taste in the mouths of many South Africans.

An “unhinged” Maseko accused eNCA’s head of news Kanthan Pillay of censorship, claiming that he abused his power to settle political scores.

Maseko has left eNCA to join a competitor and claims he was not allowed to serve his notice period. Instead, he was ordered to vacate his position immediately, an instruction that allegedly came from Pillay.

At this time, it is not clear which broadcaster he will be joining. However, since May, at least four eNCA journalists have jumped ship to join the newly established Newzroom Afrika.

Maseko’s explosive allegations against Pillay inspired an online community of South Africans to start an #eNCAMustFall campaign.

Viewers who have lost trust in the impartiality of the broadcaster and are challenging people to block eNCA on all platforms, including DStv, where it is hosted on Channel 403.

Since Wednesday, eNCA has lost hundreds of thousands of followers on Twitter, and the numbers just keep on dwindling.

Pillay has since deleted the controversial tweet he posted, calling all eNCA employees who have left the broadcaster to join a competitor, “rats”. Nothing has been said about how the broadcaster plans on dealing with this debacle from an HR perspective.

It’s also been alleged that eNCA’s share price has dropped significantly after the events that unfolded on Wednesday.
