It may not be a shock to many of us… but Pravin Gordhan has made his preferred candidate for the ANC leadership known to us all.

He told Talk Radio 702’s Eusebius Mackaiser during an interview on Tuesday that ‘nothing would change’ if Dlamini-Zuma was ushered in to replace her former husband at the ANC’s upcoming electives in December

The former Finance Minister says he is backing Cyril Ramaphosa as the party’s next leader. He believes that Mzansi’s best chance of economic and social recovery comes from him, rather than Jacob Zuma’s first choice.

‘More of the same’ if NDZ wins

Given that Mr Zuma fired Gordhan from his cabinet back in March’s mad midnight reshuffle, you can understand his suspicion with anything that JZ supports as a ‘good idea’. In fact, he doesn’t see a difference between the president or his ex-wife…

“I have heard nothing which says South Africa (under her leadership) will be different from the one we have had over the last five years. I don’t want to experience the same as we did the last five years. Where we see decline and where the economy is positioned in such a way that sees the majority of people continually miss out.”

“Hope for the party lies in producing the right leadership and the right type of cadre. Hope lies in doing the right thing and then having people see we’re doing the right thing.”

What does Gordhan see in Ramaphosa?

Pravin Gordhan believes that ‘hope’ is best embodied by Ramaphosa. The Deputy President has nudged ahead of NDZ as the favourite to take over, despite her backing from ANC loyalists.

The Dep. President’s experience in business and his trade union membership are factors that Mr Gordhan sees as leadership material.
