The Northern Cape Provincial Government will commemorate Women’s Day in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District, on Saturday 10 August 2019.

This years’ annual commemoration will be held under the theme “25 Years of Democracy: Growing South Africa Together for Women’s Emancipation”. Premier Dr Zamani Saul is scheduled to deliver the keynote address, accompanied by the Northern Cape MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Bernice Sinxeve.

The importance of Women’s month

The significance of Women’s month in South Africa is dedicated to the commemoration of 1956 Women’s March. The iconic march saw 20 000 women march to the Union Buildings to protest against the discriminatory pass laws. This march has been celebrated since 1995 as Women’s Day to recognize the important role played by women during the struggle for liberation against colonisation and apartheid.

This month is not limited to launching programmes for women, the government is encouraging media, businesses and civil society to reveal any gender inequalities as South Africa has a zero-tolerance approach to any gender-based discrimination

65th anniversary of the 1954 Women’s Charter

This year’s Women’s Month takes place with the 65th anniversary of the Founding Conference of the Federation of South African Women which established the 1954 Women’s Charter.

The bill essentially called for a society where women do not form a society separate from the men and therefore share in the problems and anxieties of men and join hands with to remove social evils and obstacles to progress.

“As part of advancing empowerment of women and fighting against the abuse of women and children , the Northern Cape Provincial Administration will be rolling out a number of programmes throughout the month of August . The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture will host a dialogue between professional women and grade 12 learners at Kalahari Museum in Upington. In an effort to continuously drive an agenda to build a better tomorrow.”
