North West: Fatal plane crash sparks emergency response

A fatal plane crash has rocked locals in the town of Koster. North West officials have since made a grim discovery underneath the wreckage.

There’s been a tragic aviation accident in Koster, North West on Thursday. A small plane crash was reported in the province around midday, forcing nearby emergency response teams into action.

Koster is a small farming town situated on the watershed between the Orange and Limpopo Rivers. It sits to the south-west of Rustenburg, and with some 20 000 residents calling this town home, a small-scale air crash is likely to have a significant impact on the local community. The following details were confirmed to us:

  • – Police spokesperson Aafje Botma has confirmed that a light aircraft was discovered on the outskirts of Koster
  • – The plane crash is believed to have happened on Thursday morning.
  • – Firefighters and the local police spent ‘hours’ at the scene.
  • – The wreckage was found in some nearby woodlands.
  • – We’ve also got confirmed reports that there was one fatality.

Light aircraft in fatal incident

ER24 were the first responders on the scene. They issued a statement detailing the recovery operation. While searching through the ‘smouldering wreckage’, they found the body of an adult male. No other injuries or deaths have been reported.

“One person was killed this morning when their light aircraft crashed on a farm outside of Koster, North West. ER24 paramedics and the Provincial Fire Services arrived on the scene of the plane crash at 11:52 to find the aircraft’s smouldering wreckage in a field. Medics and Fire personnel searched the area for any patients.”

“After some time, medics found the body of a man under a part of the plane. Unfortunately, the man had already succumbed to his injuries. Nothing could be done for him, and he was declared dead. The details surrounding this incident are unknown, but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.”
