More than 150 homes in the North West have been demolished and the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) says it will be investigating.

The families were evicted when the CPA gained a court order

The homes that were destroyed are based in Mahobieskraal, near Sun City. According to reports, families were evicted before their houses were demolished. This was allegedly following a court order obtained by Bapolomiti Communal Property Association.

However, the SAHRC revealed that this case is an infringement of the rights homeowners have to shelter. The SAHRC’s Zama Luthutli says that the houses included permanent structures and shacks.

Some residents were unaware of the eviction – Commission

Luthutli spoke about the way in which the aforementioned court order was obtained adding that some residents were unaware of the eviction process, reports SABC News.

“We are informed that about 150 houses were demolished. So, this is a very significant number of houses, including these shacks and also permanent structures. So, one of the things that we are also informed, is that there was a court order obtained by the CPA.

“However, there are issues that are raised by the community, as to how the court order was obtained, but we are still trying to gather more information and get more court papers regarding that, because what we are informed also is that some people were not even aware of this eviction processes,”

says Luthutli.

‘It wasn’t handled well’: SAHRC on young sangoma’s suspension

Previously, it was reported that the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) says the death of Mbalenhle Ngobese, a 15-year-old sangoma and learner at Nombika High School in Ndwedwe, KwaZulu-Natal should have never happened.

The 15-year-old sangoma was suspended from school earlier this year because of her sangoma attire and missed classes and exams. She reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself.

As previously reported, the learner said that she was forced to wear ibhayi (which is what sangomas and other traditional healers wear or drape themselves with) over her uniform due to her ancestral calling. Read the full story here.
