The Free State police are investigating a case of murder after a woman was found dead in her Winburg home on Saturday, 24 July. Members went to the residence after concerned neighbours were unable to reach the deceased.

NEIGHBOURS ALERT POLICE – WOMAN’S BODY FOUND

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Captain Stephen Thakeng said the neighbours of the deceased called the police to the house in Voortrekker Street, Winburg.

The neighbours reportedly worried when they were unable to reach Nomathemba Sekonyela on 22 July. They contacted her husband and he allegedly told them his wife was in Pretoria.

“Members swiftly responded and upon arrival at the scene, members found all curtains, doors and windows of the house closed… Upon closer inspection members found that the door was forced open,” said Thakeng.

Nomathemba’s body was found inside the house with visible strangulation marks on her neck. Her arms were also marked by signs of a struggle. She was covered with a blanket.

“The sister of the deceased in Pretoria has been informed about this incident,” said the police spokesperson. Her husband, Teboho Sekonyela, a former police constable, was nowhere to be found.

The Winburg police station opened a murder case for investigation and is looking for Teboho as they believe he may be able to help.

“He is driving a sky blue Volkswagen Polo with registration number HBH 073 FS,” said Thakeng.

Members of the public with information about the former policeman’s whereabouts are encouraged to contact the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Lizelle van der Westhuizen, at 082-466-8875 or call Crime Stop at 08600-10111.
