It’s been an eventual day for the Democratic Alliance (DA). Transport and Public Works MEC and provincial leader Bonginkosi Madikizela resigned on Wednesday, followed by DAWN leader, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo.

Bad day for the Democratic Alliance

Dr Nomafrench Mbombo resigns

As reported by SABC News, Western Cape Health MEC, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo resigned as the DA Women’s Network Federal leader – a position she has held since 2018 – on Wednesday, 28 April 2021.

Dr Mbombo joins a long line of DA leaders who chose to step down from their roles, including Mmusi Maimane, Herman Mashaba, Nosimo Balindlela, Lindiwe Mazibuko, and now Bonginkosi Madikizela.

DA in the Western Cape confirmed Mbombo’s resignation, explaining that she will remain on the provincial cabinet as Health MEC, according to provincial chairperson Jaco Londt.

“I can confirm that Mbombo has resigned as the DA’s Women’s Network Federal (leader), her deputy, Arlene Adams, will step in and attend meetings”.

No reason for resignation provided

Her message, which was seen by Times Live, reads: “DAWN deputy leader will be attending federal council [the party’s highest decision-making body] and lead DAWN until a time new leadership is elected.

“I am resigning as DAWN federal leader”.

Mbombo has not yet cited a reason for her resignation and party spokesperson Siviwe Gwarube could not be reached for clarification at the time of publishing.

South Africans react

The reaction on social media, however, has been quite telling, with some South Africans highlighting their belief that the Democratic Alliance is a “white racist party”. One user, Collen Gwebu, tweeted:

“Bonginkosi Madikizela has resigned as DA Western Cape leader and Western Cape Health MEC Professor Nomafrench Mbombo has also resigned as DA Women’s Network Federal leader. Black people in the DA: We warned you a long time ago that the DA is a white racist party”.

Another used said: “Africans continue to be casualties in the DA. Dr Nomafrench Mbombo has resigned as DAs women’s network but she remains holding a the position of health MEC”.

Bonginkosi Madikizela’s resignation

Madikizela, the Transport and Public Works MEC and provincial leader resigned from both positions on Wednesday after backlash over his qualifications. Madikizela reportedly lied about his BCom degree.

DA provincial chairperson in the Western Cape, Jaco Londt, said the party respects Madikizela’s “decision and the honourable route he has taken by stepping down as leader”.

“This shows the clear difference between the DA and ANC”.

Following Madikizela’s resignation, Albert Fritz will continue in his role as the acting provincial leader until the party holds elections at the Provincial Council in May.

Meanwhile, DA Chief Whip Natasha Mazzone denies ever having claimed to have a tertiary education. Read more about the DA’s qualification scandals here.
