‘Lower weekend demand’: Lights out for load shedding at midnight

Eskom confirmed there will be no load shedding for South Africa over the weekend due to a lower demand for electricity.

Eskom announced that load shedding will be suspended at midnight on Friday, 14 October, as it anticipates that there will be a lower demand for electricity over the forthcoming weekend.

ESKOM TO CUT LOAD SHEDDING AT MIDNIGHT

The national power supplier said a pair of generation units – one each at Arnot and Majuba – returned to service since Wednesday night while four units were taken offline for repairs.

As things stand, 5254MW of capacity is offline due to planned maintenance while a further 15 190MW is unavailable because of breakdowns.

Eskom said it would provide further updates on the load shedding forecast for the week ahead on Sunday afternoon, 16 October. However, an update could come sooner if there are any significant changes to the country’s power system.

“Load shedding is implemented only as a last resort in view of the shortage of generation capacity and the need to attend to breakdowns,” said Eskom.
