Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the inquest is still under investigation.
“No one has been charged at this stage. Once the investigation is complete, the inquest court will make a decision,” she said.
This comes after a three-year-old girl was mauled to death by a pitbull that exited its yard through a broken gate and attacked her while she was playing in the street with other kids on 19 December 2021 in Zwide.
“It is alleged that at about 16:20, Simamkele Kovu (3) was playing in Msengana Street near her house when the dog attacked her. The dog was stabbed multiple times by a resident who tried to save the child. She sustained several bite wounds on her neck and face and succumbed to her injuries at the scene,” Naidu said.

The dog was stabbed to death during the attack.
She said it is further alleged that the dog belonged to a teenager from the same street but was currently out of town at the time of the attack.
Police are urging residents to make sure that their property is secured and that their pet canines remain within their secured boundaries.
Last month a four-year-old toddler was so severely injured when a pitbull terrier attacked her that chunks of flesh were ripped from her tiny body.
Amorey Coetzee (4) sustained more than 15 large open wounds over her body.
