Pending post-mortem results will determine the strength of the case involving a scholar transport driver who allegedly reversed on a Grade 2 learner in Soweto.

Seven-year-old Sinikeziwe Samkelo Ndlovu (now deceased) sustained life-threatening injuries in school on 17 May when the driver struck and dragged her with a vehicle on the school premises.

Sinikeziwe, who attended Hector Peterson Primary School in Dobsonville, spend over a month in critical care at Leratong Hospital before succumbing to her injuries.

“My younger sister was badly injured on the head and some of the brain liquid was coming out from the eye,” her sister, Senamile described the condition she found a helpless Sinikeziwe.

While the family prepares for the funeral, they were displeased by how the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) and police treated the matter. Senamile cited that the District office in Florida wasn’t helpful because they said matter did not involve a school teacher and fell outside the school hours of the learner.

Regarding the police, they could not fathom why the driver was not charged with murder yet.

Updating on the investigation, Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello told The South African that a case of reckless and negligent driving was initially opened after the accident.

The scholar transport driver is said to have been playing music on blast when he reserved and knocked Sinikeziwe on the school grounds.

POST-MORTEM KEY IN SINIKEZIWE’S CASE

Furthermore, Colonel Sello said once the post-mortem results are out, the docket will be referred to the Senior State Prosecutor to change the charge.

“No one has been arrested at the moment,” she confirmed.

If unhappy with the procedure, Sello advised the family to lay a formal complaint with the local Station Commander or District Commissioner of Johannesburg.

The family plans to lay Sinikeziwe to rest this coming Sunday.

This is a developing story.
