No arrests yet in kidnapping of Nkangala Municipal Manager

Police in Mpumalanga say there are no new developments in the kidnapping of wheelchair-bound Nkangala District Municipal Manager Maggie Skhosana. 

Maggie Skhosana was kidnapped with her driver Gugu Mtsweni on Thursday, 20 October 2022. 

NKANGALA DISTRICT MM KIDNAPPED 

As previously reported, the South African Police Service (SAPS) said, according to information at its disposal, it is alleged that the victims were attacked at the municipality premises gate before they could enter. Reports indicate that Skhosana and her driver were stopped by suspects in a white sedan wearing police uniform and both vehicles were seen driving in the same direction following each other.

Spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said immediately after the incident was reported, police launched an investigation and the victim’s vehicle was recovered abandoned in one of the mines in Middelburg.

The wheelchair and other properties believed to be belonging to the victims were also recovered in the abandoned vehicle, with no sight of the victims.

Authorities have found the car used in the kidnapping of Nkangala District Municipality Manager, Maggie Skhosana.

Mohlala there is a possibility that her kidnapping has something to do with her work as a Municipal Manager but also it could be just a criminal activity. 

Mohlala said it is a unique case as such seldom happens in Mpumalanga. He added that they have not yet received calls from opportunists claiming to have the MM and her driver or demanding a ransom. 

“We are investigating whether it is politically or criminally motivated and whether it is employment related. We will not close our net.”
