No matter how you spin it, Nkandla is scandalous. ANC’s Mathews Phosa

The ruling party’s former treasurer-general and struggle stalwart is no stranger to speaking his mind, and recently described the Nkandla saga as “scandalous.”

Phosa, who played an important role in the struggle against apartheid and who also served as NEC member of the ANC said that Nkandla is a product of ‘a culture of immunity and impunity’ that has taken hold of South Africa.

Speaking to EWN, he said that a lot has changed since the ANC came into power back in 1994.

“There is a lot of corruption. It has become systemic in municipal government‚ provincial government and national government. Corruption is systemic.

“And what do we do? Instead of hitting the corruption at the heart‚ we protect one another. We introduce a culture of immunity and impunity. And it’s wrong for the ANC to do that‚” he said.

On Nkandla, Phosa said:“From any angle you look at it‚ it’s scandalous.”

Zuma was found to be in contravention of his oath of office and the Constitution of the republic, yet parliament had failed in its duty to act against the president.

“I believe strongly that the president must go … I feel very much in a big crowd saying he must go. I don’t feel lonely. You can repeat a hundred times that the branches say he is forgiven‚ I cannot accept that‚” Phosa said.
