72-year-old Lary Miller admitted during an interview with Sports Illustrated, that he shot and killed an 18-year-old rival gang member. Miller was just 16 at the time.

He served his jail time for other gang activities. And while he was behind bars, he obtained a degree in accounting.

At the time of the murder though, Miller said he was drunk and looking for revenge after his friend was stabbed to death.

“That’s what makes it even more difficult for me, because it was for no reason at all,” Miller says. “I mean, there was no valid reason for this to happen. And that’s the thing that I really struggle with and that’s—you know, it’s the thing that I think about every day. It’s like, I did this, and to someone who—it was no reason to do it. And that’s the part that really bothers me.

“We were all drunk. I was in a haze. Once it kind of set in, I was like, “Oh, s**t, what have I done?” It took years for me to understand the real impact of what I had done.”

Larry Miller: A dark past

Keeping the killing a secret for so many years had a heavy impact on Miller mentally. He says it came with reoccurring nightmares and constant migraines. But at the same time, keeping the story buried allowed him to build a monstrous career. This led him to his current role as chairman of the Jordan Brand.

Miller says he hopes the story will inspire those who have been in prison. He also hopes it will be a lesson for society on how prisoners are viewed.
