A newborn baby believed only to be hours old was reportedly found abandoned in a construction site in Port Shepstone, Kwa-Zulu Natal .

A newborn baby boy was reportedly found abandoned at a construction site in Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday, 02 February 2023.

According to The Witness, the baby was discovered wrapped in a plastic bag and a t-shirt by a nearby hardware store owner.

Medical personnel were dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, the medical personnel found the baby in a hypothermic state. However, they worked quickly to stabilise it before transporting it to a nearby hospital.

INFANT BELIEVED TO BE HOURS OLD

The boy was estimated to be just hours old.

The matter has been referred to the police for investigation.

ORGANISATION EXPRESSES DISSAPOINTMENT

Nadene Grabham, co-founder of Babysavers SA, has expressed her disappointment in the situation.

“It’s time to take steps towards legalising safe relinquishment of infants in South Africa. [We are] currently building our network of safe drop off points across the country and we urge all people to come on board and support us in our efforts to save these little lives,” said Grabham as quoted by the report.

ANOTHER ABANDONED BABY

This incident comes after a good Samaritan rescued a newborn baby who had been abandoned in the Phoenix bush in the sweltering heat. in January.

IOL reported that a woman heard a baby cry while hanging her laundry.

She asked two bystanders to investigate, and to their surprise, they discovered a baby in a plastic bag.

The infant was naked, sunburned, and dehydrated.

According to the report, Phoenix police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said the department was investigating a case of child abandonment.
