Is there anything in our lives that Google does not have a say in? From Android phones to what we watch on YouTube, even our work and personal email are mostly done through Google’s Gmail service. Now, Google is giving us all a new Gmail design.

Thanks to some top-notch tech reporting from The Verge, Google has revealed that it’s planning to launch a new Gmail design in just the next few weeks. If you ever check your Gmail on your phone, the changes won’t seem that alien to you.

The company says the tweaks will bring the mobile and desktop version closer together in appearance.

What’s up with the new Gmail?

Aside from appearance, Google is implementing smart replies for Gmail on the web. This feature is basically just the quick few words of suggested replies that can be found when looking to reply to a message on mobile.

A new snooze feature will also be available. This will allow you to avoid email threads until you’re ready to reply. If you liked it on your phone, chances are you will like it on your desktop.

The new design also brings with it a handy sidebar with the option of using Google’s calendar. The sidebar allows you to carry out tasks side by side with your email messages. In essence, this will allow you to see when you’re free while replying to an email about a meeting request. If your boss asks if you’ve completed one of your Google tasks, you can scroll through those without closing the email.

Google is also offering three brand new layouts for users to choose from. The three options include a default view that highlights attachments, a comfortable view that does not highlight those attachments and a compact view that is almost the same as the current Gmail design (for those who don’t like change).

So when do I get it?

Google has said that it will make the new features available to G Suite and Gmail users “in the coming weeks”. Google will host its flagship conference on 8 May, expect more announcements and an official unveiling after the show.
