Us South Africans are quite an unlucky bunch when it comes to all things COVID-19. From new COVID variants being first discovered here because our scientists are just so good. To the fact that our 2nd and 4th waves began in December. Not very festive that, is it? Aside from all the sudden red listing and banning of South Africans, those of us who have already arrived abroad are suffering too. Hundreds of South Africans were left stranded for hours after touching down in Amsterdam

COVID variant: What’s going on with SA flights in the Netherlands?

The Dutch government joined several other counties in banning South Africans and flights from here.

Two flights coming from South Africa landed in Amsterdam on Friday. After being made to wait for hours over fears of the Omicron new COVID variant. They were all tested again for COVID. According to Dutch Health Authorities, there could be around 85 positive cases on board the two flights.

Both planes were already on route as the Dutch government announced it was banning flights from SA.

Passengers on board one of the flights were able to capture the moment the pilots informed them of the delays. All while the Dutch aviation authorities and government figured it what to do.

New cases of the Omicron variant?

On Thursday, our Department of Health and scientists had identified only 22 cases of the new COVID variant Omicron. Almost all of them were in Gauteng. Despite this small number and our incredible transparency with the world, the West shut us out.

The Dutch government now says that it is examining all positive cases from the flights. This will allow it to see whether there are any Omicron cases amongst the group.

But while we are all getting banned. Belgium identified its first case of the omicron variant. The man had not travelled to South Africa and was unvaccinated. The case itself also has no links to South Africa.

Do you think Beglum have been put on any red lists?
