AbaThembu king Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo, who is a nephew of Nelson Mandela, reportedly plans to join the Democratic Alliance (DA) as he thinks that the ruling party “has lost its way,” and pushed corrupt leaders to the top of the party.

Dalindyebo had allegedly informed DA leader Helen Zille that he intends to join her opposition party. He admitted that he was not sure what his people’s reaction will be as he wants to to campaign for the DA ahead of next year’s elections.

Explaining what motivated him to join the DA he said, “The government has betrayed our people; the government has betrayed our kingdom. We believe there is no reason to back the ANC because it has been enjoying our support and abusing it. It is high time we gave our support to credible leaders.”

“One of the biggest disappointments is corruption itself and it [the ANC] is not doing anything to change the environment of the poor,” Dalindyebo added.

He also criticised Madiba’s grandson, Mandla Mandela, calling him a “controversial individual,” and describing his actions as “stupid.”

Mandla recently hit the headlines over the “grave saga,” as 16 members of the Mandela family filed a court case against him after he allegedly removed the remains of Mandela’s three children from Qunu, where Madiba grew up, to Mvezo, where he was born, and where Mandla is chief. They want the remains to be moved back to Qunu. Mandla’s legal team is expected to launch a challenge to the court order.

“It’s all things that were aimed at self-elevating himself, things that were targeting some stupid profits and stupid games that came from corrupt ends,” Dalindyebo commented.
