South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello said a case of general theft was opened on 2 July. However, no arrests have been made thus far.

Nelson Mandela, who enjoyed boxing in his youth, was gifted the World Championship belt by U.S. boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard. It is valued at approximately R50 000, according to SABC News.

According to eNCA, which broke the story early on Wednesday, staffers at Mandela House saw that the locks were tampered with when they reported for work on 1 July.

When workers entered the building they saw that the belt was gone and reported the matter to the Orlando Police Station.
