Operation Dudula leader, Nhlanhla ‘Lux’ Mohlauli says the planned National Shutdown carries a high risk of criminal activities which include possible looting amongst others.

It is not yet clear who is at the helm of the planned National Shutdown however, police in the country are on high alert.

NHLANHLA LUX ON NATIONAL SHUTDOWN

Last week the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) confirmed its backing of the idea of a National Shutdown on Friday, 10 June due to the rising petrol prices and the cost of living amongst other things. A number of organisations have issued contradictory statements regarding the proposed shutdown. The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) has denied being involved in the planning of the national shutdown.

Some have questioned whether this is a real shutdown or just social media activism, seeing that the hashtag trended for days since last week. Despite this, Nhlanhla Lux has urged people to protect their communities at all costs.

“Protect your communities at all cost; deploy the community to be around key points the whole day. We must never allow an unknown force to infiltrate our communities.”

POLICE ON HIGH ALERT

On Thursday, the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) said it is aware of unsigned messages and posters circulating on various social media platforms calling for a National Shutdown.

“Those behind the messages are warned and reminded that prohibiting people’s freedom of movement is a criminal offence. Members of the public are therefore cautioned against spreading such messages that seek to mobilise communities to respond to the shutdown.”

NATOINTS

The NATJOINTS also called for South Africa to work together with law enforcement agencies to uphold and enforce the law.

“Any action aimed at contravening the law will be dealt with accordingly within the ambit of the law.”
