The trial of three police officers accused of killing Eldorado Park teenager, Nathaniel Julies, will start afresh on Monday, 3 October. This comes after the Presiding Officer Judge Ramarumo Monama died suddenly after a short illness earlier this year.

NATHANIEL JULIES TRIAL RESTARTS

Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesperson Lizzy Suping said the accused officers – Simon ‘Scorpion’ Ndyalvane, Caylene Whiteboy and Voster Netshiongolo – will be in the dock before a new judge at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The trial was already underway when Judge Monama died on Thursday, 17 February 2022. Nathaniel Julies’ mother, Bridget Harris, previously said she was exhausted by the fact that the trial was starting over and said it was draining to have to hear the “same things over and over again.”

Nathaniel Julies was allegedly shot and killed by the police on 26 August 2020. The accused claimed the 16-year-old with down syndrome was shot after failing to respond to questions. Gauteng Premier David Makhura initially said he was caught in crossfire between the police and gangs.

Eyewitness accounts differ and they said there was no gang presence in the area. It is alleged that Ndyalvane shot Julies with a pump action shotgun at close range and the officers removed his body from the scene.

Julies’ father, Clint Smith, told Daily Maverick that he found his son’s body at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital.

“I found my son. He was shot. The police left him in Bara [the hospital]. They shot him in the chest with a pump action. A 16-year-old boy with a pump action? Ay! Ay! Ay!” said Smith.
