Seven killed and scores injured in collision on N8 notorious stretch

Drivers of both vehicles involved in the N8 collision in Free State were declared dead on scene along with other passengers.

At least seven people have died in a horrific collision between a long distance bus and a truck on the N8 near Botshabelo in Free State.

The accident happened on Thursday, 10 November around 06:00 and both drivers were declared dead on scene along with five others.  

N8 HORRIFIC COLLISION BETWEEN BUS AND TRUCK 

The bus involved in the accident was travelling from Zone 5 in Thaba Nchu to Bloemfontein in Free State. 

Three people were critically injured, 19 others suffered moderate injuries while 32 others had minor injuries.

Free State Police, Roads and Transport spokesperson, Hillary Mophethe, said the collision happened the truck driver allegedly overtook the bus when he noticed an oncoming vehicle. In an attempt to avoid a head on collision he reportedly swayed the truck to the left lane and crashed into the front right of the bus resulting in the horrific accident.

The injured were reportedly transferred to hospitals in Bloemfontein, Botshabelo and Thaba Nchu.

The road remained closed for a few hours while emergency services personnel waited for jaws of life in order to remove trapped bodies

Free State police said they are yet to confirm the exact number of passengers who were in the InterState bus through the company’s ticket system.

InterState Bus Lines CEO George Mokgothu confirmed that they have launched an investigation to obtain more information regarding the circumstances that led to the collision. .
